Enhancing Industrial Safety: The Journey of Termont’s Mobile Lockout Box
July 19, 2022

In the sprawling landscapes of Québec, from the picturesque Saguenay Lac Saint-Jean to the bustling US border lines, and from the serene Laurentians to the vibrant Beauce, Énergir stands out as a beacon of innovation and safety in remote site maintenance operations. With a vast network of nearly 10,000 km of underground pipelines, Énergir efficiently distributes natural gas to over 200,000 customers, including close to 8,000 industrial sites. This impressive reach, covering 98% of Québec's natural gas distribution, highlights Énergir's commitment to energy accessibility and reliability.

Navigating Challenges in Remote Area Safety

The question that arises is, how does Énergir ensure the safety of its employees in these remote areas, especially in compliance with the stringent lockout safety regulations of the province? The answer lies in their innovative collaboration with EZSecur. Faced with the daunting task of maintaining safety in these isolated locations, the Énergir project team joined forces with EZSecur to develop a robust solution for lockout equipment management.

Innovative Lockout Equipment Solutions

EZSecur proposed a dual approach to tackle this challenge: the introduction of emergency mobile cases and the installation of permanent cabinets at each station across the province. These emergency mobile cases are designed to be part of the maintenance team's kit, ensuring immediate access to lockout equipment during critical situations. The permanent cabinets, on the other hand, offer a constant and secure storage solution for the lockout equipment, tailored to meet the unique needs of each site.

The Technical Journey: From Concept to Reality

This project presented a series of technical hurdles that the team had to overcome. The primary objectives included:

  1. Selection and Quantification: Determining the necessary lockout Tagout equipment for maintenance operations and deciding the appropriate quantities.
  2. Customization and Durability: Designing containers that withstand extreme weather conditions, meet size requirements, ensure ergonomic equipment layout, and are vandal-proof.
  3. Prototyping and Optimization: Creating multiple prototypes to find the optimal solution and managing production costs to align with project budgets.
  4. Timely Delivery and Adaptability: Ensuring prompt delivery of large quantities within tight deadlines and adapting to client feedback post the initial batch delivery.

The successful accomplishment of these objectives within a short span of six months is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the EZSecur team.

Ongoing Employee Training and Deployment

While the technical aspects of the project have been largely realized, the Énergir team continues to focus on the critical phase of employee training and deployment. This phase is crucial in ensuring that the workforce is fully equipped and knowledgeable about the new safety protocols and equipment, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of these innovations.

The collaboration between Énergir and EZSecur in enhancing workplace safety in remote areas of Québec is a shining example of proactive and innovative industrial safety management. This project not only ensures the safety of employees in challenging environments but also sets a benchmark for similar initiatives globally.
